Application Requirements

  1. Print off and complete the form included on this web page
  2. Submit a type-written essay of about 350 – 500 words to:
    • Describe when you first became interested in horticulture
    • Describe your practical experience as a volunteer or employee in a horticultural-related field
    • Identify workshops or courses you have taken and what you found useful from these
    • Outline your career plans in this field
    • Explain why you should be the winner of the scholarship
  3. Attach the essay to your form.
  4. Submit a transcript of your most recent marks
  5. Submit a recent resume

The completed application (first 4 requirements above) should be placed with the guidance office of your high school no later than the third Thursday of May. Be sure to provide your name, address and telephone number

Decision Process

The applications will be collected and reviewed by the Scholarship Committee. They will be ranked based on academic standing, practical experience and the written essay.

The winner will be notified and receipt of tuition will be requested at that time.

Cobourg Horticultural Society Scholarships

Award: When funds are available we award one or more $500 scholarships to a Cobourg high school graduate to further study in agriculture, horticulture, landscape architecture or environmental science.

Previous Scholarship Recipients

Our scholarship winner for 2010 was Kate Hunter, an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys sketching nature. As part of the school's ECO team at CDCI West and a member of the Cobourg Community Centre Operations Committee she helped to protect our environment during her high school career. Kate has continued her studies in Landscape Architecture while attending the University of Guelph.

The 2009 winner of the CHS Scholarship was Amy Reinert, of CDCI West. Amy had been involved in the recycling program and creation of a xeroscape garden at her high school. She is studying Environmental Science at the University of Guelph.

Travis Greydanus received our $500 scholarship in 2008. Travis, a graduate of St. Mary's High School, went on to study Agricultural Business at the University of Guelph.

In 2007 we awarded two scholarships. Nick Dolomont of St. Mary's Secondary School and Samantha Parker of CDCI East. Nick went on to study Landscape Design at Fanshaw College in London, Ontario while Samantha attended Niagara College to train as a Horticultural Technician.

In 2006 Alex Reynolds, honours graduate of St. Mary's Secondary School won CHS's Scholarship. He studied Environmental Engineering at the University of Guelph. Also during 2006 Ashlea Hegedus-Viola received a CHS Scholarship prior to her Honours Environment and Resource Studies at the University of Waterloo. Ashlea was involved in work and educational programming at Cobourg's Ecology Gardens.
